William Frederick George Godfrey (1884-1971)

William Frederick George Godfrey CPE, CSGA was born in 1884 in London, England, and came to Canada in 1910.  He first settled in Montreal, but soon moved to Ottawa where he studied under Ernest Fosbery and Paul Alfred. He then moved to Toronto to attend classes at the Toronto Central Technical School where he studied under A. Harvey, John Chester and F.S. Challener.  Godfrey was also a trained architect and he conceived and developed the idea of demonstration cases to illustrate various printing techniques. During the 1920s he exhibited pencil drawings, dry points, and block prints. The latter received wide recognition at American exhibitions, which encouraged Godfrey to focus on relief printing. He produced most of his block prints during the 1930s. Godfrey passed away in Toronto in 1971.
