His interest in the arts of Japan are most evident in this particular work. The treatment is that of a ukiyo-e (“picture of the floating world”), Japanese woodblock print of the 19th century. Heightening this aesthetic is the artist’s choice of paper, and the stylized red inkstamp that represents his name.
